Truth Will Win!

"This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began.” Titus 1:2 (NLT)

In today’s political climate, what one party believes is the truth the other believes is a lie, and vice versa. Each side believing themselves to be more righteous and truthful than the other; both horribly blinded by division and chaos. We live in a world where the truth as they see it is subjective, and that is a very dangerous thing indeed. It is exactly the climate the enemy wants. We are now witnessing the manifestation of seeds of deception and division that he has sowed in the minds and hearts of people for many years. I dare say that the political climate is a microcosm of society at large, and to lean too heavily on receiving the truth from those who believe themselves to be powerful would not be wise.

Truth is more valuable than any of us can define. It is relevant to every single thing that we have done, are doing, and will do in the future. Even without articulating its importance, we all know that truth is the fuel that motivates us to keep getting up no matter how many times we get knocked down. Its imprint is coded in our DNA, and subconsciously or consciously, we know that truth is ultimately always going to win.

It is important for us to also understand that truth is light, and without it we will walk around in darkness and ignorance. God tells us a little bit about the state of darkness in the beginning of His Word in Genesis 1:2 (NLT). This verse says, “The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” It was no coincidence that God made this revelation available to us in the way that He did. He made sure that we understood the condition of earth as formless, empty, and dark; and so too are the hearts and minds of those who refuse to know God in His sovereignty, love, and power.

God began to establish order in the earth. First was to create light and separate it from darkness. When it comes to creation, Heavenly Father could have completed everything in one fell swoop, but this was not His creative methodology. He wanted us to know concretely that He is a God of divine order. He also wanted us to be abundantly clear that this separation between light and darkness laid the foundation upon which His continued creations would rest. This gives us some idea of the importance of truth and light.

God does not change. He is faithful to His Word beyond anything we can know. His faithfulness passes every test, and we can rely on His consistency with every fiber of our beings. His patience and care is demonstrated throughout His creations, and the most profound example of it is contained in His creation of humanity. He does not rush us to know His Word, nor did He program it into us from birth. Gifted to Adam and Eve, the first couple, and all other human beings is free-will, the right to make our own choices. This includes the choice of whether we will pursue a relationship with God, and accept the love of Christ into our hearts. We don’t have to do this, but it is the heart of God that every person will choose to reciprocate His love and be saved.

Basking in the light and enjoying resplendent fellowship with the Holy Spirit in the Garden of Eden, it is astounding to think that Adam and Eve would make a free-will decision to turn their backs on it, but that is exactly what they did. They followed the disobedient pattern of the evil one, and entered his territory of darkness. Here again, we see a separation of darkness and light. This terrible choice by the first couple caused them to be separated from God; and therefore, separated from the light.

They made a drastic mistake, and we might be tempted to ask why God didn’t stop them from doing so. Again, Heavenly Father does not change. He is faithful one million percent. Romans 11:29 (NLT) tells us, “For God’s gifts and his call can never be withdrawn.” God bestowed the gift of free-will on humanity, and He will not overstep it. The choice to sin was theirs to make, just as it is always ours to make. There are plenty of choices that each of us wish that we had not made. These choices perhaps caused us to lose out in a major way. God knew that we would make them, and He knew it was not prudent for us to do so; yet He allowed us to make wrong choices and poor decisions even though the consequences would cause us to live beneath our privilege as His sons and daughters. He didn’t want this for us, but He is faithful to His Word and will never overstep it.

This is how love behaves. Love does not bind or put one in bondage. It brings liberty and light; and just like truth, love always wins. No matter how far we get off track; no matter how many mistakes we make, if we allow the Word of God to illuminate our paths, we’ll find our way back to where God desires us to be. This should bring us an enormous amount of comfort. God’s Word cannot fail, and He cannot lie. Titus 1:2 (NLT) tells us, “This truth gives them confidence that they have eternal life, which God—who does not lie—promised them before the world began.”

Many Christians today are standing on shaky ground. They are too involved in the chaos and confusion in the world, and not nearly as involved in the things of God as they should be. We have allowed our attention to be diverted away from the truth of God’s Word. I pray this is a reminder or wake-up call to keep your eyes focused on Heavenly Father. He is the One True Sovereign God, and He doesn’t need anyone’s help to be who He is. His Word is truth. His Word is His Will, and His Word will come to pass. We must remember that the introduction of light dispels darkness; the introduction of God’s Word brings light, because God’s Word is truth. Psalm 119:130 (NLT) tells us, “The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.” We are children of light through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and we should continue standing on God’s Word firmly. We should have every confidence and faith in the reality that in the end, God’s truth will win. ■
